All leather goes through one of several types of tanning processes. We use the method of vegetable tanning for our Old leather, Washed, and Dolce collections. Why do we choose veg-tanning over other tanning processes for these collections? • Veg-tanned leather is known for its durability, strength, and character. The unmistakable smell and feel you associate with real leather comes only by using the veg-tanning method. Like wine, this stimulates the senses in natural and mysterious ways. • Veg-tanned leather is an eco-friendly sustainable material and free of harmful residues. Our tannery is part of a cooperative water purification system that helps protect the environment. • Veg-tanning is an Old World skill that blends artistry and precision. It cannot be learned overnight. Our tanning partners have three generations of artists, each passing down family recipes only they know.
General characteristics of our Signature Italian Leathers
- BOSCA signature leathers are tanned in Italy in a small town between Florence and Pisa, near the Arno River.
- BOSCA leathers are full-grain leathers.
- Our rawhides are responsibly sourced from French farms, primarily small-scale, family-run businesses. The care, diet, and ambience these herds experience is incomparably supportive.
- Our signature leathers are Certified Tuscan (Italian) vegetable-tanned leather.
- Our tannery is certified by the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale, is Silver Rated by LWG, and is sustainability audited by ICEC.
- The tannery is part of a cooperative water purification system to ensure that all effluent meets the highest European standards for minimum bio-eco impact.
- Our tannery uses primarily organic vegetable extracts and vegetable and animal oils.
- Tannins are derived from plants such as Chestnut, Oak, and Mimosa. These different compounds create leathers with different characteristics. We use Chestnut tannins.
- Being genuine vegetable-tanned signatures, leathers will all develop a beautiful patina over time. Old Leather may become less shiny over tim,e whereas Dolce, Washed, and Italo may become shinier over time.
- Our signature leathers are hand-stained. This means that the color is applied by hand to each hide, giving each cut from each hide a unique coloration.
- Our hand-stained leathers are inspected and sorted 4 times in the manufacturing process. Many skins are pulled out as not suitable for our highly natural and revealing finishing techniques.
Our Leathers
Our Collections refer to specific design themes, but are genearlly related to a specific leather. We can speak about collections and leathers at the same time. We currently have ten leathers or "collections" in our line.

- Old Leather is our most recognizable leather. The distinct look and classic design come from years of unwavering dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and style. The deep coloration and high gloss finish highlight the natural grain and textures in the hide. Old Leather lasts for decades, aging gracefully over the years. Old Leather is unmistakable, classic, and dependable, making it perfect for the distinguished individual.

Dolce
- Dolce in Italian means sweet, soft, luscious, and smooth. We named our Dolce Leather accordingly because of its decadent soft feel and distinct look. Dolce is part of our Italian, hand-stained, vegetable-tanned leathers. Like a fine wine, this leather matures, developing a soft patina as it ages to the perfect sweetness. The rich stain highlights the natural grains and textures of the veg-tanned leather. We polish the leather to a low luster, producing a semi-gloss finish.
